Samsung S23 Ultra vs Pixel 7 Pro: Similarities and Differences
How does a smartphone of about NGN 1,000,000 phone (23 Ultra) compare to the Pixel 7 Pro which is about NGN 200,000 cheaper than it? Let’s find out.
1.) Design
Both devices have designs that are unique to them. You can mistake either of them for any other brand’s smartphone on the market. When you see the S23 Ultra, you know this is from Samsung and when you see the Pixel 7 Pro, you know this is a Google phone.
Unlike the battle between the Samsung S23 and Pixel 7 where I said I like the front design of the S23 over the Pixel 7 but prefers the back design of the Pixel 7 over the Galaxy S23, the story is different here because I prefer the S23 Ultra design (front and back).
Both the S23 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro uses an Infinity-O display with the selfie camera housed in the cut-out at the top of the display. Both devices are tall but I prefer the S23 Ultra because of the flat and rectangular structure. This is not to say the Pixel 7 Pro looks bad because it is not.
Both the S23 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro have their power and volume button on the right-hand side but while the left-hand side of the S23 Ultra is plain, the Pixel 7 Por housed its sim card tray in a slot on its left-hand side.
Both devices have a microphone at the top and at the bottom, the S23 Ultra packs 2 more microphone, a bottom speaker which forms a stereo sound with the front facing speaker above the selfie camera, aUSB Type-C port, sim card slot, and Stylus Pen slot while the Pixel 7 Pro only has the bottom speaker which also gives stereo sound in combination with its front speaker and the USB Type-C port.
The Pixel 7 Pro also have more bezels around its display especially at the bottom while the S23 Ultra has uniform and tiny bezels across its display.
Turning to the back, the S23 Ultra has its Quad camera and Lafer AF sensor in a letter P design while the Pixel 7 Pro has an horizontal bar that blends into the right and left sides of the device and house its triple camera.
Both are stunning, iconic, and unique designs as I stated earlier, but I prefers the S23 Ultra because it looks great and also feels great to hold.
Both S23 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro are equipped with IP68 dust and water resistant as well as an in-display fingerprint sensor just that the one on the S23 Ultra is ultrasonic while the one on the Pixel 7 Pro is Optical. The S23 Ultra is faster and more reliable even when your hands are wet.
2.) Display
Samsung S23 Ultra is equipped with a 6.8 inches LTPO Dynamic AMOLED 2X display featuring 3088 x 1440 pixels screen resolution, an adaptive 120Hz high refresh rate, 1750 nits of peak brightness, and 500 PPI pixel density.
The Pixel 7 Pro on the hand is equipped with a 6.7 inches LTPO AMOLED display with a 3120 x 1440 pixel screen resolution, an adaptive 120Hz high refresh rate, 1500 nits of peak brightness, and 512 PPI pixel density.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra display is noticeably brighter, sharper, and have better color reproduction and science than the one on the Pixel 7 Pro.
I am not saying the Pixel 7 Pro is not bright, sharp, and does not have vibrant colors, actually it does and beats out a lot of other smartphones just not the S23 Ultra.
The S23 Ultra is being protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both the front and back while the Pixel 7 Pro is being protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.
Gaming and watching videos on the S23 Ultra is an amazing experience.
3.) OS and Performance
Google Pixel 7 Pro is powered by a 5nm Google Tensor G2 processor with a Mali-G710 MP7 GPU. There is an option to choose between 8GB and 12GB RAM both of which are LPDDR5 as well as between 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB internal storage all of which are UFS 3.1.
The Samsung S23 Ultra on the other hand is powered by 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor with Adreno 740 GPU. It also has the options to choose between 8GB and 12GB both of which are LPDDR5X as well as 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB internal storage all of which are UFS 4.0.
One thing that is clear while testing out these devices side by side is that the S23 Ultra is significantly faster in opening apps and better while gaming. It is also more efficient with better battery management.
This doesn’t come as a surprise because the S23 Ultra is equipped with a more powerful processor alongside a faster RAM and storage.
4.) Battery
Both the Samsung S23 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro are packed with 5000 mAh battery but while the S23 Ultra supports up to 45 watts of wired charging that can get the device to 100% from 0% in less than an hour, the Pixel 7 Pro supports 23 watts of wired charging which definitely takes more than an hour to fully charge the device from 0%.
Both devices battery are great and can last you a full day of usage on a single charge but you will have more percent remaining on the S23 Ultra than on the Pixel 7 Pro.
The Pixel 7 Pro supports up to 23 watts of wireless charging which is faster than the 15 watts of wireless charging on the S23 Ultra. Both devices support reverse wireless charging.
5.) Camera
Google Pixel 7 Pro is equipped with a 50MP main camera, 48MP telephoto camera, and 12MP ultrawide camera at the rear while the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is equipped with a 200MP main, 10MP telephoto, 10MP periscope telephoto, and 12MP ultrawide at the rear.
At the front, the Pixel 7 Pro is equipped with a 10.8 MP camera while the S23 Ultra is equipped with a 12MP camera.
The pictures and videos from the selfie cameras of these devices are very similar and it is hard to choose which one is better.
As for the rear cameras, the S23 Ultra did it for me overall but it was a hard decision choosing between the two.
The main cameras take similar pictures during the day and in natural light while the S23 Ultra has a slightly better picture quality than the Pixel 7 Pro at Night and in low light.
I prefer the 4K videos at 60fps on the Pixel 7 Pro to the S23 Ultra but the Samsung flagship can go up to 8K which is where it has an edge over the Pixel.
The ultrawide and telephoto lenses on the S23 Ultra also have slightly better pictures in low light and natural light compared to the Pixel 7 Pro cameras.
Conclusion
If I am to give the S23 Ultra a score of 90% for a job well done overall in all aspects, I will give the Pixel 7 Pro a score of 80% overall. Considering how significantly cheaper the Pixel 7 Pro is, I think it is amazing what it is capable of.
